The iPad was borne out of Steve Job’s vision to bring the world’s first truly mobile, mobile computer. It was a reincarnation of the original MessagePad 100 and series of other tablet PCs based on the ARM6 microprocessor. The rumor mill has been full of speculation, years prior to its release; with iSlate and iTablet rounding up the rear as potential names.
The iPad combined the best features of the current iPhone – a mobile device with enough raw processing power to output the same fluid iOS interface to thrice the current resolution. The challenged was quickly answered by Apple’s research division. Both the 16GB and 32GB, Wi-Fi and 3G versions were made available for pre-order in the first quarter of 2010.
Apple enjoyed commercial success with the iPad dubbed as the “iPhone on steroids.” It sold 33,000 units in its first 24 hours. In the time it took the original iPhone to sell a million units, the original iPad sold well over three million. The original iPad was such a commercial success that in 2010, three out of every four tablets in the world were iPads.
