The iPhone 3GS was the first smartphone from Apple to support and implement the HSUPA protocol which allowed it to post download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. It featured a redesign housing which was easier to grip, a thinner bezel and the ability to emulate 24-bit color (as opposed to then industry standard 16 to 18-bit color output).
It was also the first phone from the company to have the ability to shoot video, a feature which has caused much reluctance on the part of smartphone users and consumers. More importantly, it was also the first smartphone in the world to have an oleophobic display coating as standard. The latter significantly reduced fingerprints, thus diminishing the need for after-market screen protectors.
Despite its more obvious flaws such as limited mass storage and lackluster battery life, well over one million iPhone 3GS units were sold in its first weekend after its release. Currently, it is the only Apple product to feature all the iterations of Apple’s iOS.
